Sustainable Palm Wood Sourcing and Social Impact

Palmwood Sources

Our Palm Wood Sources

Smith & Fong sources palm wood from regions rich in palm resources, including Central America, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and Southeast Asia. In these areas, the palm wood industry holds potential for creating sustainable jobs and providing an alternative to cutting old-growth trees, which are difficult to replace. After extensive research, we chose India to begin our palm wood journey, captivated by the material’s unique qualities and its potential for making a positive impact.

Palm Wood Production Cycle

Sustainable Palm Production Cycle

Our palm wood is sourced from plantation and agricultural settings, where we work in harmony with the natural lifecycle of palm production. We primarily use sugar and coconut palm species, which have a productive lifespan of about 60 years. After this period, their fruit or nut production diminishes as the palm height increases, making it difficult for moisture and nutrients to reach the top. At this point, replanting is ideal, and we step in to provide an additional revenue stream for farmers, who are often small landholders with under 10 acres. This approach ensures a symbiotic relationship that benefits both the environment and the farmers directly.

Innovative Processing and Manufacturing

Crafting palm wood products is a complex process that requires specialized methods. Unlike traditional hardwoods, palm wood is softer at its core and denser at its outer layers. Recognizing these unique characteristics, we developed custom techniques and equipment tailored to palm, allowing us to produce durable and beautiful products, including plywood, panels, veneers, and flooring. This dedication to innovation enables us to bring the exceptional qualities of palm wood to market.
